With my art, I aim to explore the mythological aspects of ancient polytheistic religions of the Slavic regions. Specifically, I am interested in the connection between nature and the human spirit. Dating back to the neolithic times, Slavic religions and customs involved a strong emphasis on the female spirit, who was deeply respected and seen as a connection between humans and nature. The earth was seen as “The Great Mother”, and was revered as the giver and taker of life. Many characters from Slavic legends are strong female spirits, who wield a great amount of power. In my paintings, I show powerful goddesses, good and evil woodland spirits, and the places that they inhabit. I want to transport the viewer into my world, one that is caught between fantasy and reality.
